The negative construction ne...pas is used to make any statement negative. Ne precedes the conjugated verb and pas follows it.
 

Je ne parle pas anglais.	I don’t speak English.
Il ne comprend pas.	He doesn’t understand.

When ne precedes a verb beginning with a vowel or a silent h-, it is contracted to n’.
 

Il n’est pas à l’ambassade.	He’s not at the embassy.
Je n’habite pas en France.	I do not live in France.

There is also the negative ne...jamais ("never, not ever") which follows the same word order as ne...pas.
 

Je ne parle pas français.	I don't speak French.
Je ne parle jamais français.	I never speak French.

Jamais can also be used by itself.
 

Vous travaillez après six heures?	Do you work after six o'clock?
—Ah non, jamais.	—No, never!

A third negative following this same construction is ne…plus ("no more," "no longer"):
 

Il n’étudie plus le français.	He no longer studies French.
Je n’y travaille plus.	I no longer work there.
